Extreme Unction

Over the last few centuries, there has been a process of collapse of secular Catholic Spain. However, most photographers, even contemporary ones, have continued to promote the image of a mystical Spain, not so far from the one photographed by Ortiz Echagüe. Possibly Vegue's generation, which was born with democracy, was the first to have maintained a sufficient distance from the Church to be able to approach this phenomenon with the necessary estrangement.
I do not believe that another hundred years will be necessary to appreciate the documentary value, the accurate visual analysis of the social and technological evolution of the Church in these photographs. The author has achieved a visual shorthand of minimal signs that sheds light on the current Church and its problems.
Manuel Santos. Curator and historian of photography.
